Masaza Cup: Gomba Send Strong Title Warning to Defending Champions Buweekula

Record Masaza Cup champions Gomba Lions have issued a strong warning to defending champions Buweekula ahead of their friendly match scheduled for May 31, declaring that “water always flows back to its source.”

Gomba, the most successful team in the history of the Buganda Masaza Cup, say they are determined to reclaim the trophy after five years without lifting it.

The last time Gomba won the prestigious title was in 2020 when they defeated Buddu in the final. Since then, the trophy has changed hands several times, with Buddu winning in 2021 and 2024, Busiro in 2022, Bulemeezi in 2023 after defeating Gomba in the final, and Buweekula claiming the 2025 title under coach Felix Sekabuza Kawooya.

Speaking confidently ahead of the new season, Gomba team manager Resty Mbatide Namugema said the team has fully prepared for what they hope will be a sixth Masaza Cup triumph.

“The record champions are back on a mission to win a sixth trophy. We are telling everyone that Gomba is fully prepared,” Resty said.

She noted that although other counties are also preparing for the competition, Gomba's desire to return to the summit remains unmatched.

“I will not say other counties are not prepared, but Gomba has gone an extra mile in its preparations because we want to bring joy and the trophy back home. As Baganda say, water always flows back to its source, so everyone should take note,” she added.

Gomba and Buweekula are set to face each other in two friendly matches during their player unveiling ceremonies. The first match will be played on May 31 during Buweekula’s player launch, while Gomba will host the return fixture on June 7 at Kabulasoke PTC Grounds during their own unveiling event.

Resty explained that beyond the good relationship between the two counties, the matches are also intended to send a clear message to Buweekula that Gomba wants its trophy back.

“We have a good relationship with Buweekula and both counties are highly competitive. But most importantly, we want to show Buweekula that the trophy they won was only borrowed. This time, the rightful owners are coming for it,” she said.

Resty also pointed to the arrival of coach Felix Sekabuza, who guided Buweekula to last season’s title, as one of the reasons Gomba is confident of reclaiming the championship.

“The coach who won the trophy with Buweekula is now at Gomba. He is not here as a hired coach but at home where he belongs. He is both a coach and a supporter. Sekabuza is a winner and Gomba is a winning county. Buweekula should understand the message clearly — the owners of the trophy are coming for it,” she stated.

Gomba have so far played four friendly matches in preparation for the season, winning three and losing one. They have scored 18 goals and conceded six, with their latest outing ending in a 4-2 victory over Butambala.
